One Earbud Is Quieter Than the Other: How to Fix It

A quiet earbud is usually not a dying earbud. The most common causes, in order, are earwax or debris blocking the speaker mesh, a worn or wrong-size tip breaking the seal, an off-center balance setting, and only then actual driver or battery trouble. Work through those in that order and most volume imbalances disappear at step one or two. Here is each fix, plus the test that proves when the hardware really is at fault.

Why does one earbud get quieter over time?

Because earbuds live in ears, and ears produce wax. Day after day, microscopic amounts of wax and skin oil migrate into the metal mesh that protects the speaker, and the blockage builds so gradually that you adapt until the difference between sides becomes obvious. One ear typically produces more wax than the other, which is why the imbalance is lopsided rather than even.

This gradual pattern is actually the diagnostic clue: a slow fade points strongly at blockage, which cleaning fixes. A sudden drop on one side after an update, a re-pair, or a drop on the floor points at settings or damage instead, and the fixes below sort those out too.

Clean the mesh the safe way

Remove the tip and look at the mesh under good light; a waxy film or amber buildup confirms the usual suspect. Clean with a dry soft brush or dry cotton swab using gentle circular motion, then lift residue with a piece of sticky tack or reusable adhesive putty pressed lightly against the mesh and pulled away. The putty trick pulls wax out of the weave rather than pushing it deeper.

What not to do matters as much: no liquids of any kind on the mesh, since fluid carries dissolved wax inward and can reach the driver; no toothpicks or pins, which tear mesh; no compressed air aimed into the earbud, which drives debris toward the diaphragm. For silicone tips, wash them separately in mild soapy water and dry completely before refitting.

Check the seal and the settings

A worn, torn, or wrong-size tip leaks bass and volume dramatically, and one side's tip always wears first. Swap the left and right tips as an experiment: if the quiet side follows the tip, the tip was the problem, and a fresh pair costs little. Foam tips compress permanently over months and are the most common silent culprit.

Then spend thirty seconds in settings. Every phone has an audio balance slider buried in accessibility options, and it gets moved by pockets, children, and accessibility shortcuts more often than anyone expects. While there, disable any hearing-accommodation or spatial-audio profile and retest; these features deliberately shape per-ear volume and can persist after being set up accidentally.

Prove it with a proper test

After cleaning and settings, measure instead of guessing. Run our left/right test: play the identical tone on each side at the same volume and compare. Matching loudness and tone quality on both sides means the fix worked; a side that is still quieter, or sounds thin and dirty on a pure tone, has moved into hardware territory.

For true-wireless earbuds, add one more variable: re-pair the set from scratch, because left and right roles and volume calibration are negotiated at pairing, and a corrupted pairing occasionally produces imbalance that survives everything else. A factory reset of the buds is the final software step before concluding the driver or battery is failing.

When the quiet earbud really is dying

Hardware failure earns the diagnosis when the imbalance survives cleaning, fresh tips, balance settings, re-pairing, and a second source device. In true-wireless buds the actual fault is often the battery rather than the speaker: a degraded cell browns out at higher drive levels, so the weak bud plays quieter and dies earlier. A bud that also drops connection or discharges faster than its partner fits that pattern.

From there the honest options are warranty service, single-bud replacement, which most major brands sell, or retirement. Driver repair on sealed earbuds is not economically real. If the pair is otherwise loved, the single-bud route typically costs 40-60 percent of a new set and completely resets the imbalance.

Rarely. Wax sits in the mesh, which is designed to be a barrier, and cleaning restores full volume in most cases. Permanent harm happens mainly when liquid cleaners push wax through to the driver, which is why the dry-cleaning rule matters.

Why does the quiet side also sound muffled underwater-like?+

That specific muffled character is the acoustic signature of a blocked path: wax in the mesh or a collapsed foam tip filtering high frequencies. If it appeared after rain or sweat, moisture in the mesh does the same thing temporarily; let it dry and re-test before doing anything drastic.
