What does this speaker test check?

The test plays a 440Hz reference tone that alternates across the stereo field between left and right, so each speaker takes a turn carrying the sound. A healthy speaker reproduces the tone cleanly at consistent volume; problems announce themselves as dullness, buzz, crackle, or one side dropping out.

It is deliberately a listening test, not a scoring test. Your ears comparing before and after a cleaning session is more reliable than a microphone-based score, because mic readings vary wildly with room noise, cases, and where you hold the phone.

Why does this test not need microphone access?

Because it never records anything. The tool generates tones locally in your browser with the Web Audio API and plays them; that is the entire data flow. A test that asked for microphone permission to score your speaker would add privacy cost for a number that room echo can swing by half.

That design also means the test works in any modern browser, on any phone, in silent environments or loud ones, with nothing sent to a server.

How to read what you hear

Listen for four things: loudness, crispness, evenness between speakers, and unwanted noise. Each maps to a specific problem and a specific next step on this site.

  • Quiet on both speakers: check volume settings, then run the dust cleaner sweep.
  • Dull or underwater sound: likely moisture, run the water eject mode with the grille down.
  • Crackle or buzz on the tone: debris on the mesh or a damaged driver, clean first, then suspect hardware.
  • One side silent or much quieter: that grille is blocked or that driver is failing.
  • Clean tones but bad music: the speaker is fine, look at the app or equalizer.

How do you test the speakerphone specifically?

Testing the speakerphone is a different job from testing the media speaker, because a call uses three things at once: the loudspeaker, the microphone, and the network. A phone that plays these test tones perfectly can still sound terrible on speakerphone, and that mismatch is itself the most useful diagnostic result you can get.

Work through it in order. Play the tones here first to confirm the loudspeaker itself is clean. Then record a voice memo at arm's length and play it back to check the microphone. Finally place a real call on speakerphone. If tones are clean and the voice memo is clean, the speaker and mic are both fine and the fault is in the call path: signal strength, a weak connection, noise suppression, or simply the other person's phone.

Most phones also route calls through the earpiece speaker rather than the loudspeaker unless speakerphone is switched on, so a call that sounds thin while media sounds full often means the earpiece is blocked by a case, screen protector, or pocket lint rather than anything being broken.

What can an online speaker test actually tell you?

A browser-based mobile speaker test checks the output path: whether each channel produces sound, whether tones come out clean or distorted, and whether one side is quieter than the other. That covers the majority of real speaker complaints without installing anything or granting any permissions.

What no online test can do is measure your speaker objectively. Apps that claim a decibel or frequency-response measurement need microphone access, and a phone microphone recording its own speaker in your room measures the room as much as the hardware. This test deliberately stays on the honest side of that line: it gives you sound to judge with your own ears and clear guidance on what each result means.

Using the test before and after a fix

The test is most powerful as a bookend. Run it before a water eject or dust cleaning session and fix the sound of it in your memory, then run it again after. The comparison tells you honestly whether the session helped, needs repeating, or is not going to solve the problem.

Why does my speakerphone sound bad but music sounds fine?+

Because calls use the microphone and the network as well as the speaker. If test tones and a voice-memo playback are both clean, the hardware is healthy and the problem is in the call path: weak signal, a poor connection, aggressive noise suppression, or the other person's device. Music only exercises the output half of the chain.

Is an online speaker test as good as an app?+

For diagnosing the common faults, yes, and it avoids installing anything. Apps can only add value by using the microphone to measure output, and a phone mic recording its own speaker in an untreated room measures the room as much as the hardware. Listening to clean reference tones is the more honest test.

How do I test the earpiece speaker rather than the loudspeaker?+

Place a call with speakerphone switched off and hold the phone to your ear normally, or use a voice memo played back through the earpiece if your phone offers it. My phone has one speaker. Does left/right testing still matter?+

Yes, it still tells you plenty. On a mono phone both channels play through the same speaker, so you are listening for volume, clarity, and crackle rather than balance. On phones that use the earpiece as a second speaker, the alternation reveals earpiece problems that music playback hides.

What frequency does the speaker test use?+
