Do they actually work differently?
No, and it is worth being clear about that because a lot of marketing implies otherwise. Every one of these plays low-frequency audio through the loudspeaker. Water leaves the grille because the diaphragm's movement pushes air, not because of any proprietary technology, and no software can push water that sound cannot reach.
The only meaningful technical variables are the frequency range, the duration, and the volume. Most implementations sit somewhere between roughly 150 Hz and 250 Hz, which is where a phone speaker moves the most air. Ours sweeps 165-250 Hz rather than holding one pitch, because droplets of different sizes in different parts of the grille respond at different frequencies.
When the browser tool is the right choice
When the phone is wet now. The entire value is that there is nothing between you and the tone: no store, no download, no account, no permission prompt. Our own usage data supports how common this situation is, with 99% of sessions running on a phone rather than a computer, which is exactly the profile of someone dealing with the problem in the moment.
It is also the only option that works across ecosystems. The same page runs on an iPhone, an Android phone, a tablet, or a friend's device, which matters when the wet phone is the one you cannot easily use.
The honest limitation is connectivity: the page has to load once. If you are somewhere with no signal, a previously installed shortcut will serve you better.
When the Siri Shortcut is the right choice
When you are regularly around water and want a permanent button. Installed once, the Water Eject Shortcut sits on the home screen, runs offline, and can be triggered by voice, which is genuinely convenient for swimmers, boaters, and anyone whose phone gets wet more than occasionally.
The trade-off is trust and setup. Apple's Shortcuts gallery does not carry it, so you install it from a third-party link, and a shortcut can contain actions beyond playing a tone. Use a well-known version, review its actions before running it, and understand that this is a one-time cost you pay for permanent convenience.
It is iPhone and iPad only. Android has no equivalent system feature, which is why Android users almost always end up with a browser tool or an app.
When an app makes sense, and when it does not
Rarely, honestly. An app asks you to download software, often grant permissions, and frequently sit through ads, all to produce a tone that a web page produces instantly. For a one-off emergency that is a poor trade.
The narrow case where an app earns its place is bundled functionality: if you want speaker cleaning, a tone generator, an SPL meter, and a test suite in one offline package and you will use them repeatedly, an app can be reasonable. Judge it on the reviews and the permission list rather than the store screenshots.
What should make you close the store page: any app promising to repair water damage, guarantee results, or requiring a subscription for a tone. None of those claims can be true, because the underlying physics is the same free thing everyone else does.
What none of them can do
All three share the same hard limit: they clear the speaker grille and nothing else. They cannot dry the inside of a phone, reverse corrosion, undo a shorted board, or repair a damaged driver. If your phone was submerged, will not charge, or shows a liquid detection alert, sound is one small step inside a larger rescue that is mostly about powering off and drying properly.
A useful test of whether any of these tools is being honest with you: does it say what it cannot do? A tool that only promises is a tool that has not thought about your actual problem.
