Why is there no sound after water exposure?

Three different problems produce a silent speaker after water: a grille so waterlogged that the sound cannot escape, audio being routed somewhere else entirely, and a driver that water has actually damaged. They need different fixes, which is why the first minute should go to diagnosis rather than panic.

The encouraging statistic from repair experience: most no-sound-after-water cases are the first two causes, both of which are fixable at home in minutes. Water is very good at making a phone seem broken while everything underneath is fine.

First: rule out the fake causes

Water on the screen registers phantom touches, and a wet phone in a panicked hand gets buttons pressed. It is genuinely common for the silence to be a muted phone, a volume slider dragged to zero, or Do Not Disturb toggled during the fumble. Check all three before assuming hardware.

The sneakiest fake cause is Bluetooth. If your phone reconnected to earbuds, a car, or a speaker somewhere in range, all audio is playing there instead of the phone. Water exposure often happens in exactly the places, cars, gyms, bathrooms with a shower speaker, where a paired device is waiting to grab the audio. Turn Bluetooth off entirely while testing.

How to eject the water blocking your speaker

With the fake causes ruled out, treat the grille. Point the speaker at the floor, set volume around 60-80 percent, and play a low-frequency sweep for 30 seconds. The tone drives the speaker diaphragm through large strokes that pump air and water out through the mesh, the same principle the Apple Watch uses to clear its speaker after swimming.

Muffled versus silent: what the difference tells you

Muffled, fizzy, or quiet audio almost always means water in the grille, which is the best-case scenario and exactly what eject tones fix. The sound is being made correctly and then smothered on its way out.

Total silence that survives the checklist above and two eject sessions points somewhere deeper: a driver coil shorted by water, a flex cable connection interrupted, or the audio amplifier on the board. Crackling that gets worse over days suggests active corrosion. These are repair-shop problems, and going early beats going late because corrosion spreads.

How long should you wait before assuming damage?

Give it 24 to 48 hours of proper drying before you conclude anything. A speaker that is silent an hour after the dunk is often merely waterlogged, and moisture deeper in the cavity keeps dampening the diaphragm until it evaporates. Dry the phone powered off, speaker down, with airflow, and retest the next day before writing the speaker off.

The exception is worsening symptoms: audio that returns and then degrades, spreading crackle, or a phone that heats up abnormally. Those signs mean water is still doing damage, and waiting longer works against you. Power off and get it inspected.
