Timelines depend on exposure rather than model. A splash on the outside is gone in 30 minutes to two hours once wiped. Rain, a sweaty pocket, or bathroom steam takes two to six hours because moisture reaches the port and speaker mesh. A brief drop in water needs 12 to 24 hours, and full submersion for more than a few seconds calls for 24 to 48 hours before charging.

Apple's published advice for a wet Lightning or USB-C connector is to wait at least 30 minutes before trying to charge, and to allow up to 24 hours for the connector to dry completely in a bad case. That upper figure is for the port specifically, which is the slowest part of the phone to dry because it is a deep, narrow cavity with almost no airflow.

Use it as a checkpoint rather than a nag. If the alert clears within a few hours, drying went normally. If it is still appearing after a full day in dry conditions, the cause has usually shifted from water to residue: sweat, salt, or a sugary drink leaves a conductive film behind as it evaporates, and that film keeps triggering detection until it is cleaned off.

Why Apple says no rice, no heat, and nothing in the port

Apple's support guidance explicitly advises against putting an iPhone in a bag of rice, warning that small particles can damage the device. It also rules out external heat sources and compressed air, and says not to insert foreign objects such as cotton swabs or paper towels into the connector.

Each rule has a mechanism behind it. Rice cannot reach moisture inside a sealed phone and sheds starch dust near the openings. Heat from a hair dryer or radiator can warp adhesives and stress the battery while doing little for a cavity that needs airflow, not temperature. Swabs and tissue leave fibres against the pins, which trap moisture and cause the exact charging faults you were trying to avoid.

What Apple does recommend is simple: tap the iPhone gently against your hand with the connector facing down to dislodge droplets, then leave it in a dry area with some airflow.

Does your iPhone model change the answer?

Less than people expect. Recent iPhones carry an IP68 rating, with iPhone 12 and later tested to greater depths than earlier models, while iPhone 7 through iPhone X were rated IP67. A higher rating means water is less likely to have got inside in the first place, which improves your odds, but it does not make a wet phone dry faster.

Two caveats matter more than the rating number. Those ratings come from controlled lab tests on new devices using fresh water, and Apple states that water resistance is not a permanent condition and can diminish as a result of normal wear. How to tell when your iPhone is actually dry

When more drying time is not the answer

Drying prevents further damage; it does not reverse damage that already happened. If audio improves and then gets worse again, if the battery starts draining unusually fast, if the phone is warm while idle, or if you can see green or white residue in the port, those are signs that liquid reached beyond the connector and left corrosion behind.

Sea water deserves special mention. It conducts far better than fresh water and dries into salt that keeps corroding for weeks. An iPhone that went into the ocean should be dried and then professionally cleaned even if it seems perfect, because the residue is invisible from outside and the value of cleaning drops with every day of delay.
