What does "blown" actually mean in a headphone?
A blown driver is physical damage to the tiny speaker inside the earcup: a torn or deformed diaphragm, a voice coil that overheated and warped, or a coil partially detached from the cone. The driver still moves, but it no longer moves cleanly, and the mechanical defect adds its own noise to everything it plays.
That is why the signature of a blown driver is distortion tied to the audio itself. A tear buzzes when the diaphragm flexes across it; a warped coil scrapes as it slides in its magnetic gap. Silence, by contrast, is usually a cable or connection fault rather than a blown driver, and clean audio that is merely quiet points at blockage or settings.
The two-minute blown-driver test
Pure test tones reveal what music hides, because any sound that is not the tone is coming from damage. Start with the bass tones on our bass test at moderate volume: a healthy driver plays a clean hum from 40-60 Hz upward, while a blown one buzzes, rattles, or sounds papery, and the texture usually worsens as you step lower. Bass is where damage shows first, since low frequencies demand the largest diaphragm movement.
Then use the left/right test to compare sides. Play the same tone left then right at the same volume: a damaged driver sounds quieter, thinner, or dirtier than its partner. Finish with a sweep through the midrange; buzzing that follows the sweep across many frequencies is mechanical damage, while a buzz at one single frequency is often just resonance.

What blows headphones in the first place?
Sustained high volume is the main killer, and heat is the mechanism. The voice coil is a hair-thin wire that dissipates the amplifier's power; run loud for long sessions and it overheats, deforming the coil or the glue holding it. Clipping makes this worse: when a source is pushed past its limits, the distorted signal delivers more sustained energy to the coil than clean audio at the same setting.
The non-audio causes are mechanical and environmental: drops that knock the driver out of alignment, moisture that stiffens or corrodes the diaphragm assembly, and simple age as materials fatigue. A single loud accident, like a connector popping while the amp is turned up, can also do it in one moment.
Blown, blocked, or broken cable: telling imposters apart
Two common problems imitate a blown driver. Earwax or debris packed into an earbud's mesh muffles output and cuts volume on one side, which feels like damage but cleans off; the giveaway is that blocked audio is quiet-but-clean, without the buzz. A failing cable or jack causes crackling too, but its crackle reacts to touching or bending the cable and often cuts audio entirely at some angles, while a blown driver's crackle only follows the audio content.
Software imposters exist as well: a balance slider off-center, an EQ profile with bass removed, or a spatial-audio mode can all make one side sound wrong. The two-minute tone test cuts through every imposter, because each has a distinct signature: settings shift loudness cleanly, blockages muffle cleanly, cables crackle with movement, and blown drivers distort with content.
Can blown headphones be fixed?
Sometimes, and it depends entirely on the design. Headphones with replaceable drivers or user-serviceable earcups, common among studio and audiophile models, can be revived with a driver swap that costs a fraction of the pair. Sealed true-wireless earbuds are effectively unrepairable; the labor to open them exceeds their value, and waterproofing never survives the surgery.
The honest arithmetic: if the pair cost under about a hundred dollars, replacement usually wins; above that, check whether the manufacturer sells replacement drivers or offers out-of-warranty service. Before either, run the test once more after cleaning the mesh and trying a different cable, because a surprising share of "blown" headphones turn out to be one of the imposters above.
