What causes a phone speaker to crackle?

Volume behavior is another strong clue. Hardware crackling almost always gets worse as volume increases, because the diaphragm moves further and interacts more with debris, residue, or a tear. Software clipping often crackles at a consistent level regardless of volume, or only when a particular EQ boost pushes the signal past its limit.

  • Play audio from three different apps, such as a music app, a video app, and a web page. Crackle in all three points to hardware.
